Technology of growing seedlings in tea bags

Garden plants

Savvy summer residents have found an economy substitute for peat tablets: they increasingly began to use drunk tea bags to grow seedlings of garden and horticultural crops.
This method is simple and effective, so we will be happy to tell you about it.

Seedling growing technology: "tea"

Preparing tea bags

It will not be possible to prepare the required number of tea bags for sowing seedlings in three days, so you need to start stocking them in advance: the used tea bag is dried well and put away for storage.

How to grow seedlings without soil is an unusual solution

When it's time to sow seeds for seedlings, cut off the top of the bags to make it look like a glass. Do not throw away the tea leaves, as it is an excellent addition to the substrate, saturating it with useful substances and improving its composition. Add a small amount of universal seedling potting mix to each bag and arrange the bags on a rimmed pallet.

To make the bags stable, fill the spaces between them with cotton wool or soil mixture. This will prevent the bagged soil from drying out too quickly.

Sowing seeds in tea bags

In each prepared tea bag you need to put 1-2 seeds. After that, the crops must be well moistened and removed to a place suitable for seed germination.

After the seedlings that have appeared grow up and get stronger, they must be dived. To do this, the plants are planted in cups, while you do not need to get them out of the bags.

As a result, during transplantation, the root system of the seedlings is not damaged, and they quickly take root and begin to actively grow and develop. After the root system gets stronger and begins to actively grow, it will easily break the bag.

How to feed seedlings - to be healthy

In such a simple way, you can grow strong seedlings of both garden and vegetable crops. According to numerous reviews of summer residents, it is much easier and more convenient to grow seedlings in tea bags than in peat tablets. In addition, the recycling of used tea bags saves money and is environmentally friendly.

How easy and cheap to grow seedlings in tea bags

An inexpensive and effective way to tackle the daunting task of growing seedlings at home is to use tea bags. It sounds rather original and implausible, but in fact it turns out to be quite effective and convenient. The method is especially relevant when you really want to start the preparatory process for the summer season as soon as possible, and there is not enough space for seedlings in a small city apartment.

Seedlings: common mistakes when growing

Gardeners usually put boxes-pots with crops of heat-loving crops on window sills. However, the windows must be prepared in advance for growing seedlings. How to avoid annoying oversights when growing various vegetable crops.

When choosing a location, it is very important that the plants receive a sufficient amount of light, therefore it is preferable to use windowsills oriented to the south, southwest and southeast. However, the seedlings will lack light on them. You can make up for the deficiency with the help of special lamps.

When growing seedlings, beginners at their summer cottage do not succeed, because the containers for seedlings are placed on a cold windowsill. You can insulate it by placing sheets of foam plastic under the boxes and pots with crops.

Dry air and no disinfection

In the autumn-winter period, the air in rooms with central heating is very dry, which negatively affects the growth and development of seedlings. Humidifying the air is easy: just put on the windowsill a few shallow bowls with clean, settled water, in which you can put carefully washed pebbles.
Before installing the seedling containers on the windowsills, it is necessary to treat them with a disinfectant solution. It is also necessary to wash the glass, as condensation accumulates on them, which contributes to the occurrence of fungal infections.

Thickened crops often cause poor plant development during the seedling period, therefore, it is necessary to collect them in separate containers in a timely manner. It is also undesirable for the planted plants to wither on the windowsill, tightly pressed against each other. You can avoid crowding by using lightweight seedling racks. These lightweight designs allow for infrequent placement of pots, which creates a comfortable seedling environment. A properly organized place is the key to success in growing seedlings of heat-loving crops.

Growing seedlings in tea bags

Growing healthy and strong seedlings can take a lot of energy. Experience helps in such situations, however, in the absence of your own experience, you can almost always use someone else's. For example, some gardeners use tea bag seedlings left over from tea.

In some cases, using tea bags for growing seedlings
can be an excellent alternative to peat tablets, as they are used in a similar way. After the results of direct use of the tea bag have been obtained, a small amount of soil must be poured into the bag, while the sleeping tea leaves remain below. The advantage of this method is that you can create blanks at any time, regardless of the season, including in winter.

In each of the bags you need to drop 1-2 seeds (the one that turns out to be weaker can be eliminated in the future, also the seeds can be processed before sowing). The finished bags must be placed in a container with low sides, and a small amount of earth should be placed in the gaps between them. Thanks to this measure, the water will evaporate to a lesser extent, since the surface from which evaporation occurs is reduced.

In the spring, it is enough to moisten the workpieces with water, put the pallet in a warm enough place, and wait for the results. Soon enough, you can see that shoots have appeared. During development, the root system spreads within the tea bag, so it will not be damaged during transplantation.

The amazing method of growing seedlings in tea bags is ideal for small seeds that produce fragile sprouts. It gives the gardener the opportunity to end up with healthy and strong seedlings, the risk of disease in which is significantly reduced.

In this case, it is important to observe the timing of sowing seedlings, since they differ in different crops. For example, lettuce should be sown about 4-5 weeks before the intended planting in open ground, and black onions - 8-12 weeks.

Growing seedlings according to the Chinese method

Hello dear Asiend people.
I met an article on the internet. Seemed interesting.
I have not tried this method yet. But I tried to twist the overgrown seedlings in the hole when planting for permanent residence. I like this method - I always use it. I tried to bend down and pour the soil in cups near the plants at the stage of cotyledon leaves and the first true leaves. I don’t know yet what will come of it.
But if the seedlings outgrow, it will be possible to try the Chinese method.

===============================================================
Chinese way of growing seedlings
Features of the method
The essence of the method is that the seedlings are sown earlier by a month. It stretches, which is absolutely natural. It is cut at the level of the cotyledon leaves and rooted in the ground.
By doing such manipulations, the tomato plant undergoes severe stress, stops growing, spends additional time on rooting, but at the same time the shoot becomes thicker, and the flower cluster is laid closer to the ground.
Since the sowing was carried out earlier, the plant enters fruiting in the time period that is genetically laid, but it seems to the vegetable grower that ripening begins earlier.
The method "works" only on indeterminate varieties and hybrids.

Advantages and disadvantages of the method
The Chinese method of growing tomato seedlings has both advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages are the following indicators:
• seedlings grow shorter and more compact
• the whole plant form of an adult tomato bush is lower
• there is no need to dive seedlings
• the number of brushes increases.

Thus, according to breeders from China, this method of cultivating tomatoes has several advantages over the conventional method.

The seedlings can be grown much faster, at least 45 days, than the one that was planted as usual. Accordingly, for planting in the ground or under film shelters, Chinese seedlings will be ready sooner.
The very first tassel is tied almost at the ground, and not at a height of 60 cm, after the ninth or eleventh leaf. The number of bunches that have time to ripen depends on the climatic conditions of the region.
Plants that have suffered stress in the first weeks of life try to yield the harvest as soon as possible.
Some growers point out that the tomato is becoming more resistant to disease. In fact, resistance is a genetically inherent trait and no amount of “cutting” can improve it.
Some argue that the yield is increasing. This statement is also unfounded, since it all depends on the variety and cultivation technique.
If we consider the positive aspect, the fact that the number of brushes is increasing, then this is so. However, the question arises whether the fruits that have been set will have time to gain marketable weight and ripen.

The disadvantages of this method are as follows:
• sowing takes place a month earlier than usual
• the need for additional illumination of seedlings
• the need for additional shelter to create a greenhouse effect
• seedling survival rate is 75%.

Technological process
To understand the methodology for carrying out the work, let's figure it out in order.
Since the moment of cutting off the shoot will stop the growth, and rooting also takes time, to "catch up" the sowing is carried out a month earlier.
We prepare the seeds in the traditional way.
If the seed is purchased and processed, then we sow dry, if not processed, then we carry out heating. To do this, wrap the seed in a damp cloth and put it in a warm place. After 2-3 days, it is ready for sowing.

Prepared seeds are planted according to the Chinese method in a common box. Drainage must be placed on the bottom, and soil on top. The seeds are laid out in grooves according to the 4x2 centimeter scheme. The seeds are sprinkled with soil a little, the soil is moistened with a spray bottle, the box is covered with a film and placed on the windowsill on the south side of the house. The film will need to be removed after the first shoots. The germination temperature of the seed should be between 24-26 ° C. Shoots will be visible in 4-6 days.

Seedling care
Once most of the seeds have germinated, the temperature should be lowered.
• In the afternoon - 16-18 hail. C
• At night - 12-14 degrees. C.
We hold this temperature for 4-5 days.
With a decrease in temperature, you need to increase the illumination. Since planting tomatoes according to the Chinese method implies a very early sowing, it is necessary to equip the growing area with additional phyto lamps. Daily supplementary lighting for 2-3 hours in the morning and 2-3 hours in the evening will allow tomato plants to be more squat.
During this period, care consists of watering and maintaining an optimal temperature.
Planting a tomato in Chinese does not involve diving in the traditional sense of the word. Growing in one container, the plant should grow to a height of 20 cm. During this period, the shoot will have 3-4 pairs of true leaves and a couple of cotyledons. / However, some gardeners carry out pruning much earlier - see video /
At this point, we proceed to circumcision. Before pruning the shoots of the plant, you need to water it well so that they have an optimal turgor of the foliage and stem.
Prepare in advance:
• individual containers with nutrient soil
• cups with which we will cover the planted seedlings to create a greenhouse effect

• root former solution
• cutting tool (sharp knife).

Having prepared the container and filled it with soil, we compact and make a hole in the center. With a sharp, clean knife, cut off the tomato plant at the level of the cotyledon leaves and lower it into a solution with a root former for a few minutes. Next, we plant each cut tomato plant in an individual cup. We press the soil, water it with the same solution in which the sprouts stood and immediately cover it with plastic or glass cups to create a greenhouse effect.

Considering the Chinese way of growing tomato seedlings, the video can clearly demonstrate the process of pruning and planting.

Care
Immediately after the procedure, all plantings must be removed to a dark and warm place. If there is no dark place in the house, then it can be created by covering the cups with opaque material.
The temperature should be maintained at 22-24 degrees. C. In such conditions, the tomatoes are kept for 3 days.
The survival rate is approximately 75%.
Now we expose the plants to the brightest place and lower the temperature to 18-20 degrees C during the day and 14-16 degrees. C at night.
During this period, the stem will thicken, and those leaf plates that are there will increase in size. Then the plant will start growing.

During the rooting period of planting, it is necessary to ensure:
• watering
• airing
• light.

Watering is carried out rarely, but so that excess water comes out through the drainage holes at the bottom of the cups. The water should be warmer than the room temperature, if possible rainwater. Excess water from the pallet must be drained.
Airing is carried out by raising the glass. The first 2 weeks for a few seconds, then for a few minutes. As soon as we make sure that the plant has started to grow, the greenhouse cups need to be removed.
If the cultivation is carried out on windowsills without additional lighting, then the cups must be turned daily. This procedure will ensure that the shoots are even. Since the Chinese way of planting a tomato implies that seedlings should not be tall and stocky, then it is impossible to allow the stretching of the shoots, and for this one should zealously monitor the uniform illumination of the shoots.

If the soil mixture is prepared taking into account the need for seedlings in nutrients, or a universal soil is used, then additional fertilizing during the seedling period is not required.

Transfer to the ground
Chinese tomato seedlings begin to bear fruit quickly. Given this, one should not hesitate to plant it in a greenhouse and open ground when the threat of frost has passed.

Cut tomatoes do not produce very tall shoots, but they are tall anyway, so a place protected from the wind should be provided.
If you are going to transplant, the day before, the seedlings should be thoroughly watered. Carrying out the work, it is necessary to monitor the integrity of the earthen coma and try not to destroy it when planting.
Having dug a hole, we release the seedlings from the container and lower the root system into the hole. We fill it with soil and press it well. Abundant watering will ensure survival.

When figuring out how to plant tomatoes in Chinese, it should be borne in mind that the first ovary is formed very close to the ground and it must be tied up in time, not allowing it to touch the soil.

Top dressing
The first feeding is carried out 1-1.5 weeks after planting, and then weekly, alternating organic and mineral feeding.
Since we no longer need an increase in the vegetative mass, and the plant has entered the phase of budding and flowering, the nutrient solutions should be of the following composition:
ammonium nitrate - 1 tbsp. the spoon
potassium sulfate - 2 tbsp. spoons
superphosphate - 2 tbsp. spoons.
These mineral fertilizers dissolve in 10 liters of water. Each planted tomato bush will need 0.5 liters of nutrient solution with a preliminary abundant watering of the plant.

Organic fertilizing solutions are made from:
• chicken manure 0.5 kg per 10 liters of water
• horse, pig, cow manure - 1 kg per 10 liters of water
• manure of rabbits, goats and sheep - 1 kg per 1 liter of water (stand for 2 days) then add 9 liters of water.
Organic dressings are carried out in the same amount as mineral ones.
If the variety you have chosen is not resistant to diseases, then immediately after planting, the bushes must be treated with fungicidal preparations. Further, the treatments are repeated depending on the weather and climatic characteristics.
Choosing this or that method of cultivation, a vegetable grower must weigh all the pros and cons and independently try the method on his site, this is the only way to understand the need and expediency of this agricultural technique.

Growing seedlings in peat tablets: my successful experience

Now you can use any sowing options. But few have experimented with different methods at the same time. My favorite growing method
seedlings of small seeds - peat tablets. Maybe because I "understood" them. The point is the optimal moisture content of the tablets.

After soaking the peat tablets and placing them in the container, I squeeze them out a little, only then sow the seeds. I close the container with a lid and do not climb there for two weeks. I do not wipe, I do not spray.

Then, when the seeds sprout confidently, I open the crack and then open it gradually. And I pour the tablets - in the bottom, not on the surface.

If moss starts up, it's okay. First, moss is not a pathogen yet, and I also heard that it secretes natural antibiotics. Secondly, if you move it with a toothpick, it leaves easily. And also, if moss appears, then you definitely water the pills!

Pepper does not like very much when he is disturbed by the roots with a dive. And I grow it on peat tablets. I sow germinated seeds to the depth of the phalanx of the little finger. I germinate in a cloth wrapped in polyethylene at a temperature of 30-35 ° C. This is usually on the battery.

If your battery is hot, wrap the bag in a terry towel. And be sure to check it out every day after soaking.

The best seeds will hatch in 2 days! How much do peat tablets like peppers more? We tested it experimentally. You can check it too!

7. Homemade container for seedlings "Snail"

"Snail" - this is the name of a small roll made of a laminate backing. It is a soft, waterproof material. It is more convenient to use a substrate no more than 2 mm thick. In this way, you can grow any vegetable and ornamental crops.

Seedlings of annual flowers in a "snail". © razmnojenie

To obtain a convenient container for seedlings, 10 cm x 100–150 cm strips for a large number of seeds or 10 x 15 cm rectangles for one or two seeds are cut from the substrate.

Earth is poured onto the prepared tape or rectangle, tamped and moistened. The height of the soil layer is about 1–2 cm. Then the seeds are laid out, 2 cm away from the edge. The seeds of only one type of plants are placed in each "snail". The seeds can be placed dry, but it is better if they are already germinated or at least soaked.

When unfolding the seeds, each of them should be pressed slightly to deepen it. It is necessary to place the seeds at a sufficiently distant distance from each other, depending on the type of plant. Only in this case, the root system will develop correctly and will not intertwine with the neighboring one.

It is better to fold the roll so that later its upper part is slightly higher than the rest of the "turns", this will help each of the emerging plants to get more light. In the folded "snail", the earth should be poured flush with its edges. You should also add soil, if necessary, and moisten it with a sprayer.

The rolled up ready "snail" is placed vertically and always in such a way that the seeds are located in the upper part of the roll.

To fix the rolled "snail" use stationery rubber bands or tape. Labels indicating the variety or type of plant are also attached here.

The rolled "snail" is placed in a plastic container, which should be about 2 cm thicker than the roll. Several "snails" can be placed in a large container. All this is covered with a film - it turns out a mini-greenhouse. It is placed in a warm place, taking into account the requirements of the sown crop. The film should be periodically removed for ventilation. After the first shoots appear, the film is removed and the greenhouse is transferred to a well-lit place.

The advantages of growing seedlings in the "snail"

"Snail" does not take up much space on the windowsill, although a fairly large amount of seeds was put in it. The roll is easy to unfold and take out stronger plants from it for transplanting into a large container, and then roll it back and leave it to grow the remaining seedlings. From the deployed "snail" it is easy to take out seedlings for picking, the root system of plants is practically not injured.

In the "snail" it is convenient to grow seedlings of many flower crops, which can be transplanted directly from a roll into open ground. For example, marigolds. They will give amicable shoots, if the "snail" for the first five to six days is at a temperature of 22 ° C. After the emergence of shoots, the roll is transferred to a bright room with a temperature of 18 ° C. In such conditions, the seedlings will be strong and will not stretch out.

The ribbons or rectangles used for the "snail" can be saved for seedlings next year, they will not take up much space.

Cons of seedlings in the "snail"

This method is only suitable for the first stages of growing seedlings. When growing seedlings in a "snail", additional lighting is required so that the seedlings do not stretch out.

You need to purchase a roll of liner or other suitable material.

Dear Readers! We are sure that in this article we have described far from all non-traditional methods of growing seedlings. We will be grateful if you share your proven methods of growing healthy seedlings that you can make yourself.

I grow seedlings of cabbage, pumpkin, zucchini and other seeds in plastic from baby food (yoghurts, curds) 80-100 gr, the cups have comfortable sides, I pierce the hole on the bottom with a hot nail and plant for my pleasure, of the 7 proposed methods, nothing apply.

And rightly so)
And I think the above methods are nonsense, there is no sense.

Good day.
I was convinced in practice that if there is an opportunity Not to save on land within reasonable limits, then it is not necessary. Therefore, I use two types of homemade seedling glasses.
1. Tall milk cartons (kefir, etc.), cut by 3/4.
In the lower part of the walls (with an indentation of 1-1.5 cm from the bottom), I pierce holes with a thick needle for breathing the substrate (and excess water will not spill in which case, on the windowsill or sump, and the bottom will not turn sour).
I prepare the soil for planting on the basis of soils sold in the store with the addition of sand and vermiculite - so that moisture does not evaporate as quickly as from purely peat mixtures, and the roots breathe better.
The glasses are easy to set up with varying degrees of density as the seedlings grow.
It is easy to make notes on the cardboard walls about the name of the variety, the dates of sowing seeds for germination and planting in pots, etc.
2. Glasses with double walls made of thin foamed polyethylene, which is used as a backing for linoleum, the bottom is made of dense agrotex. A large stationery stapler is used for stapling. Then the structure is placed in two plastic breakfast bags (water leakage insurance).
For any budget, these products are more profitable than purchased ones. I grew seedlings of tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, cabbage, leeks in them.
The second type of cups is more time consuming to manufacture, but having debugged the technology, you understand that in the end you have only advantages:
glasses can be made of the desired size (tomato bushes develop well in them, they even bloom and begin to tie)
the bottom holds the soil and never gets wet, and if the roots of the seedlings develop strongly, they will germinate through the agrotex and, thanks to the moisture in the bags, will never dry out
when planting seedlings in a permanent place, in this case, tomatoes are diving of the third order, which is why they develop a powerful fibrous root system
the necessary annotations can be made on the walls of the glasses.
A note on the amount of land for seedlings. I think you shouldn't feel sorry for her here, because as a result, all the nutritious, “charged” with nutrients at the production stage, goes to the garden bed and provides a comfortable environment for the development of young plants.
All the best, good harvests!

LIKED 1 item with eggshell.
Whoever has the time, opportunity and desire can try.
In general, all ideas are very original and modern)
Thanks for the great article.
