Description and features of growing remontant raspberries Atlant

A large harvest, large and tasty berries, a minimum of care - all this is about Atlant remontant raspberries. The hybrid is grown as an annual crop, that is, an autumn harvest is obtained on the shoots of the current year. There is also a nuance - this is a mid-season variety, in the northern regions and Siberia it does not have time to give the entire declared harvest.

Raspberry Atlant story

The Atlant raspberry owes its origin to the country's leading breeder, Professor I. V. Kazakov (1937–2011). The scientist made important developments in the field of biology of berry crops, created the world's largest fund for hybrid raspberries. Ivan Vasilievich is the author of 30 hybrids, which became the basis of the Russian assortment. Among them are the first for machine assembly: Balsam, Brigantine, Sputnitsa. They combine a high yield (up to 10 t / ha) with resistance to various stress factors (diseases, pests, unfavorable climatic conditions) and, according to these indicators, have no analogues in the world.

It was Kazakov who developed a new direction for domestic breeding - remontant type raspberries. He created the first varieties in Russia that bear fruit in late summer - early autumn on the shoots of the current year. This type of raspberry is obtained as a result of interspecific hybridization. The yield is 15-18 t / ha, the weight of one berry is up to 8-9 g. Repaired hybrids adapt well to different climatic conditions, and are inexpensive to maintain. It is in this category that the Atlant raspberry belongs. Amateur gardeners and farmers call it Kazakov's best work.

Raspberry Atlant with minimal labor costs gives impressive yields

The application for registration of Atlanta in the State Register of Breeding Achievements was filed during the lifetime of the author, in 2010, but was entered into a single list only in 2015, after variety trials. The hybrid is approved for cultivation in all regions of Russia. There are reviews of gardeners who successfully cultivate this raspberry in Belarus and Ukraine.

Description of the hybrid Atlant

There are so many positive qualities in the descriptions of this raspberry that one can even doubt their veracity. However, numerous reviews on the forums, including thanks to Kazakov for such a hybrid, sweep aside all mistrust and awaken the desire to purchase Atlanta seedlings and grow in their garden.

It is a medium-ripening remontant hybrid. The berries begin to sing in the second half of August, fruiting is extended, lasts until frost. The fruits are large (more than 3 cm in length), conical or trapezoidal, leveled, the average weight of each is about 5 g, the maximum is up to 9 g. stalks.

Atlant raspberries have small drupes, firmly connected, the berries do not crumble when picked

Qualities for which farmers fell in love with Atlant:

  • high yield (on average 17 t / ha);
  • berries are dense, transportable;
  • beautiful appearance and pronounced raspberry flavor attract buyers, Atlanta berries are the first to be bought among other raspberries;
  • you can use a machine method of harvesting;
  • does not give a lot of overgrowth, which makes it easier to care for the plantation.

Of course, these same qualities are also interesting for amateur gardeners. But they can also add: 4-5 bushes are enough for one family to get enough fresh berries and prepare them for the winter. The fact is that Atlanta shoots give side branches, and do not grow with one bare whip, like many other varieties. Moreover, fruit branches appear already literally 15–20 cm from the ground and cover the entire shoot, the height of which, by the way, is no more than 160 cm. As a result, the berries are tied not only at the tops, but also along the entire length of each stem.

In Atlant raspberries, fruiting occurs almost along the entire length of the shoot, and not only at the top.

For the same reason, Atlant raspberries do not need trellises. Lush shoots lean to the ground, but balance well due to lateral branches, do not lie down and do not even touch the ground. There are thorns, but they are located mainly in the lower part of the bush. This hybrid does not get sick and does not freeze out for one simple reason. Scientists recommend cutting off all the shoots in the fall, which means there is nothing to freeze out. Annual pruning and burning of the entire aerial portion is the most radical and most effective disease and pest control measure. In the spring, new and healthy shoots will grow from the overwintered roots.

Of course, there are flaws, they were discovered by the owners of Atlanta. The hybrid is resistant to drought, but the berries will be small and dry in case of moisture deficit. In the south of Russia, it was noticed that ripe fruits soften in extreme heat and with good watering, it is impossible to collect them. A mid-season hybrid is not very suitable for regions of extreme agriculture, where the first frosts are already at the end of August - September. There Atlas does not have time to show its yield. Another nuance mentioned by lovers of natural agriculture, who do not recognize pesticides: pests start in ripe berries that hang on branches for a long time. Perhaps the reason is that in the fall they do not carry out sanitary pruning of all shoots.

Gardeners who claim that ugly berries grow in Atlanta, they crumble into drupes, shoots grow up to 2 m, lie on the ground, I would like to advise you to buy seedlings elsewhere. If the purchased plant does not have the properties specified in the description from the State Register, then it is not the variety or hybrid whose name was assigned to it upon sale. And you don't have to be deliberately deceived. Unfortunately, even large and reputable suppliers sometimes have a mis-grading of both seedlings and seeds.

Features of planting and growing raspberries Atlant

Landing Atlanta is no different from the classic:

  1. Set aside a sunny spot for the raspberries.
  2. Fill the earth by adding on 1 m²: humus - 1.5–2 buckets and wood ash - 0.5 l.
  3. Make holes the size of the roots, spill them with settled water and plant seedlings. Do not deepen the root collar.

Landing pattern - the more spacious the better. Atlanta bushes consist of 5-7 shoots, but they branch, become voluminous. The diameter of each bush reaches two meters. With a 2x2 m scheme, you can approach each plant from any side, all the shoots will be well lit and ventilated. In the case of this hybrid, it is better to plant fewer seedlings, but allocate more land for them. Atlas will thank you for such generosity.

Each Atlanta seedling will grow into a lush bush up to 2 m in diameter

It is easier to care for remontant raspberries than for conventional varieties that bear fruit on two-year-old shoots. You are free from formation. All the few shoots that grow from the ground in spring will yield a harvest by autumn. There is no need to deal with excess growth, it simply does not exist. In the fall, you don't have to figure out which shoot is old to cut, and which is new, and you need to leave it.

Caring for Atlanta includes:

  • Watering. Bushes instantly react to hot weather without watering, tying small and low-yield berries. In dry periods, water at least 2 times a week, while the soil should be soaked to a depth of 30–40 cm. It is better to lay a drip system. Keep aisles under the mulch.
  • Top dressing. For the formation of such a bountiful harvest, of course, food is needed:
    1. In early spring or late autumn, cover the ground under the bushes with humus or compost.
    2. When the shoots begin to grow actively, add liquid nitrogen-containing top dressing: infusion of mullein, bird droppings, weeds.
    3. During the period of budding and flowering, potassium and trace elements are required to form tasty and beautiful berries. Buy complex mixtures for berry crops containing these substances (Agricola, Clean sheet, Fertika, Gumi-Omi, etc.). You can do with wood ash: dust the earth with it, loosen it and water it.
    4. In the fall, make an annular groove 15 cm deep around each bush and scatter superphosphate evenly - 1 tbsp. l. on the bush. Align the grooves.
  • Shelter of vegetative shoots for cold regions. If the Atlanta berries begin to sing only in September, and cold weather is already approaching, install arcs and stretch covering material over them. You can do this in the spring to speed up the regrowth of shoots. Without shelter, for example, in the Novosibirsk region, this hybrid does not have time to give even half of its harvest.
  • Pruning. With the onset of frost, cut off the shoots at ground level, rake up all the leaves and weeds, take them all out of the raspberry tree and burn them. Cover the ground with mulch.

In Siberia, some areas of the Urals, in the North and other regions with a short summer, Atlant can be grown like ordinary raspberries. Shoots are not cut out in the fall, but they are allowed to overwinter. They will harvest next summer, however, its volume will be far from 17 t / ha, since this hybrid was not created for such a technology. If you want to grow exactly remontant raspberries for the harvest on the shoots of the current year, then buy seedlings of early varieties and hybrids: Penguin, Bryansk Divo, Diamond, etc.

It is generally accepted that remontant varieties of raspberries should give two harvests per season: in spring - on last year's shoots and at the end of summer - in autumn - on annuals. However, this stereotype is now changing. I have to read and view a lot of gardening materials, including forums, videos and comments underneath. According to my observations, more and more amateur gardeners and specialists come to the conclusion that with such agricultural technology, the yield decreases, because one root is forced to provide two waves of ripening of berries. However, the weather and the quality of care are not always conducive to this. In most cases, in spring and autumn, instead of the declared kilograms, only a few berries grow. Today, remontant raspberries are being grown for the only autumn harvest, they are considered as a continuation of the usual summer varieties. This trend is already reflected in the State Register. So, in the description of Atlanta, it is indicated that it is necessary to mow all the shoots in the fall in order to get one, but a powerful harvest on the shoots of the current year.

Harvesting and processing of raspberry harvest Atlant

To harvest the entire Atlanta harvest, the raspberry tree will have to be visited several times during the month with an interval of 1-2 days. Many gardeners consider an extended ripening period a plus - you do not need to process a large number of berries at once. All procurement work can be done calmly, for example, gradually, in portions, freeze berries, dry or cook jam. For farmers, this is, of course, a minus. Indeed, in the autumn market, raspberries are still a curiosity, they are bought up quickly, which means that a friendly harvest is preferable.

Large and dense Atlanta berry is good for freezing

The main purpose of Atlant raspberries is fresh consumption. Indeed, 100 g of its berries contain 45.1 mg of vitamin C, there are natural sugars (5.7%), acids (1.6%), alcohols, pectin and tannins, anthocyanin.

Reviews of raspberries Atlant

The main thing in growing Atlanta is watering in hot weather and cutting off all the shoots in the fall to get only one harvest, even though it is a remontant hybrid. You do not have to fight the undergrowth and thin out the bushes, because only 5-7 shoots appear annually. In order for Atlant to have the strength to plant and grow many large berries, it needs to be fed.
