According to one famous Italian musician, one should go to the Alpine mountains not with the aim of conquering them, but for inspiration. Mountain meadows are very beautiful in spring. This time of year, flowering plants, boulders and snowy peaks create an unusual, mesmerizing contrast. Apparently, the desire not to part with this beauty prompted people to create a flower garden of a special kind - a rock garden. It can be arranged in your country house, on your personal plot, in the square of a private rest house and even in a city park.
In fact, it is not forbidden to build a rock garden in any season. However, from a practical point of view, the most convenient period is considered to be early autumn. The harvest has already been harvested, and winter is still far away. You can usefully spend this time and start realizing your creative idea.
Autumn is also favorable because during the winter there will be a natural precipitation of stones. In this case, in the spring it will be possible to correct the deficiencies that have arisen, if they appear.
It should be noted that with this option, planting may have to be postponed until spring. If you plan to plant the plants in the fall, you should start work earlier.
Before deciding on the choice of location, let's answer the question: why do we need an alpine slide and why did we decide to build it?
This is not to say that the alpine slide, as an element of landscape design, is currently something super new. But this does not in any way diminish its attractiveness and ability to change beyond recognition the usual look of the garden plot. Alpine slide, done right and with soul, will be the highlight of your garden and a source of pride for you.
You ask, and what follows from this?
I just want to lead you to the idea that you need to try to find a decent, most suitable place for an alpine slide. This means the following:
I have given you so many recommendations for choosing a location for the location of the slide, that you may not want to do it at all!
In fact, I am not suggesting that you follow all these recommendations, and this is not possible in practice. It's just that if you stick to at least some of them, then the choice of the place will already be meaningful, and not spontaneous.
To build an unusual flower garden on the garden plot yourself, they take rough stones with broken edges. Smooth boulders are suitable for arranging a rock garden located next to a reservoir. A traditional slide is made of limestone, sandstone, tuff, slate or granite. They make an odd number of tiers from 3 to 5. For a small suburban area, the rock garden is made low, up to 80 cm in height. Below are photos of alpine slides with stones, created in the country with their own hands.
The Alpine structure is being erected according to a pre-drawn up project. The size diagram indicates the number of tiers, the order of placing stones. Plants are selected taking into account the color palette and the time of their blooming. An approximate diagram of a simple rock garden is shown in the picture below.
Initially, it was supposed to grow alpine plants on the alpine hill. However, their list is rather limited. Therefore, you can plant any flower, bulbous, decorative and coniferous perennial crops on it with a height of no more than 60 cm.
From coniferous crops, you can plant on an alpine hill: junipers, dwarf thuja western and folded.
If desired, long-flowering annuals can also be planted on the alpine slide: petunias, marigolds, arctotis, lobularia, balsam, tuberous begonia.
Some of these crops are grown from seeds, so you need to take care of their seedlings in advance. Some of the plants are sold as ready-made seedlings in pots. Ground cover only (sedum) must be sown directly onto the alpine slide.
Before planting, arrange all the potted plants in the pockets of the alpine slide and see how they will look in nature. Some you can swap right on the spot.
When you understand that you like the whole composition, proceed to planting. Usually it starts from the top, going down in stages. The planting depth of each plant depends on the size of its root system.
Add potassium-phosphorus fertilizers and wood ash to each hole in the pockets. When finished, water all the seedlings well with warm water. After a week, feed with a urea solution (1 tablespoon per bucket of water). Plants need nitrogen for quick survival.
You can purchase seeds and seedlings of all of the above plants from us.
Try it, experiment! And believe that the alpine slide, designed and built by your own hands, will delight you for many years!
