Why do you need a lawn roller and how to make it yourself

In an effort to give your site a beautiful, well-groomed look, have you decided to create a lawn? Of course, emerald green grass will decorate the area in front of the house and will serve as an excellent backdrop for bright flower beds, and at the same time will improve the microclimate and reduce the dust content in the air. But in order for the grass to grow well and look neat throughout the season, you will have to work hard - the lawn roller will become an indispensable assistant in this.

Buy a lawn roller or do it yourself?

The quality of the lawn largely depends on how carefully the site is prepared for it. Preliminary work begins with cleaning construction and household waste, including plastic wrap, wrappers, paper, foil - all this cannot be buried in the ground, otherwise the grass will lag behind in growth, hurt, and stand out as spots against the general background. At the next stage, the site is carefully weeded and treated with herbicides.

After that, you need to take care of the drainage layer, which will not allow water to stagnate under the lawn after heavy watering or heavy rainfall. And here it will be difficult to do without a roller for the lawn, since after removing the layer of fertile soil, you have to tamp well a layer of rubble, then a layer of sand and a layer of fertile soil.

A lawn roller will also require:

  • when compacting the earth after sowing seeds,
  • rolling the lawn after mulching,
  • laying the lawn in rolls,
  • device tracks.

And if you use the roller after cutting the grass, your lawn will look perfect and will be very soft.

It is now easy to purchase a hand-held lawn roller from an online store or specialist store. Domestic and foreign manufacturers offer garden rollers (manual lawn rollers) made of durable metal, filled with water or sand. But their cost is not affordable for everyone, and besides - why unnecessary expenses, if you can make a roller for the lawn with your own hands!

The easiest and most economical option is to use a round container (used gas cylinder, barrel), filling it with water or sand. Some gardeners get by with a regular log. For the first time, such rollers will also work, just keep in mind that a suitable roller should be no more than 70 cm wide, and weigh from 80 to 120 kg, then you will be able to achieve the best results in lawn care.

The easiest and most economical option is to use a round container.

Cement-filled pipe roller

If you expect to use a manual lawn roller for more than one season, it is safer to make it this way:

take a piece of steel or asbestos-cement pipe of the required length (the pipe will simultaneously act as a flat working surface and serve as a formwork for concrete), insert an axial pipe of a smaller diameter into the middle and fill it with concrete. All that remains is to make a handle - and you can use the heavy lawn roller.

Rink of plastic bottles with sand

One of the cheapest and fastest ways to make your own lawn roller

One of the most inexpensive and fastest ways to make a do-it-yourself lawn roller: fasten two plastic water bottles with a capacity of 19 liters with two cuffs from two of the same bottles and wrap with tape. A rope is tied to the necks of the bottles, and sand is rammed inside, the weight of the roller is about 100 kg.

Nuances of using a lawn roller

Thanks to the roller, the lawn is smooth and tidy, but it still needs to be used correctly, otherwise you risk harming your lawn. It should be remembered that the purpose of rolling is only to compact the previously leveled surface of the earth - the bumps cannot be smoothed with a roller, only the depressions will become even deeper from this. The roller actually helps to reveal hidden defects in the surface of the site. If you notice that the lawn does not become even after the first rolling, you need to level it with a pitchfork and roll it again, and so on until everything is perfectly level.

DIY lawn video

Last year's lawn needs to be rolled only in the spring in order to compact the soil swollen after winter. A day is suitable for this when the soil is wet and the grass is dry. Do not forget to remove all debris and heaps of earth after earthworms from the lawn before rolling.

You may need a lawn roller once or twice a season, so it makes sense to rent a regular garden roller - then you won't have to spend money on buying an expensive roller or making one yourself.

With your own hands - How to do it yourself

The time is about to come to tidy up the lawns after winter.

As soon as they dry out, they will need to be thoroughly combed with a rake, and some, especially old and wet ones, must be aerated.

Small lawns and wide grassy paths can be pierced with a pitchfork or wander through them in blocks filled with nails.

But for lawns from 100 m 2, an aerator is already needed. And you have to pay for it.

I made a do-it-yourself aerator from a birch block, 100-millimeter nails, and a 0.5-inch diameter and 2-meter long water pipe that has served its purpose.

The block has picked up 450 mm in length and 370 mm in diameter. Smooth, almost perfect cylinder. I drilled a hole for a pipe along its axis with a hand drill.

And the pipe was bent in the shape of the letter "P", with 500 mm legs and a meter-long crossbar. He stuffed nails into the block (the pack is gone!).

I bit the hats with nippers, and it turned out a "ruff" with bristles of nails stuffed in squares with a side of 5 cm and 5 cm sticking out of the chock.

The finished skating rink put the letters "P" on the leg. There is a thread at the end of the pipe, onto which I screwed on the coupling so that the roller does not jump off.

With such a home-made product, it takes no more than 15 minutes to let a lawn of 10 x10 m “catch its breath”. Roll yourself slowly ...

↑ Varieties of lawns

Before all the preparatory activities, it is important to decide on the type of lawn. We are accustomed to the fact that for us a lawn is a grass covering the ground. And often rock gardens, flower beds, rabatki are located in the lawn. But, there are other types of lawns. To understand what kind of lawn is needed in the country, they think in advance for what purposes they want to plant it. Will the emerald lawn be a decoration in front of the house or will your child play on it? Or maybe you want to admire the lawn and walk on it yourself to relieve all day's fatigue? Depending on the purpose and herbs are selected for sowing appropriate. And the soil is prepared in different ways, and the care differs depending on the destination.

The most common are the following types of lawns:

Planting lawn grass. Key points to know

Let's start with time. Sowing the lawn can be done in the spring, namely immediately when the ground is free of snow and warms up a little. But, if you did not succeed in doing this in the spring, then you can do this later, until the very end of the summer.

Preparing a place for planting lawn grass

The area that you have chosen for the lawn must be clean, that is, the garbage must be removed, and besides it, all weeds. Any weeds drown out "cultivated vegetation", and they do the same with lawn grass. In addition, they can introduce some diseases into your lawn, so you will need to pre-treat the area with herbicides. When you completely clear the territory, you can take care of its relief, that is, somehow correct it at your discretion. It is best when the seeding surface is level with some slope. Such a slope can be made up to 3 percent, so water will not linger on the lawn. But, on a large lawn, this slope will be significantly greater - up to 30 percent.

On the site, during its preparation, you need to remove all the bumps and pits. If you have any depressions on your lawn, then water will stagnate there, that is, puddles will appear. So the grass will just get wet. Bumps are also not needed on the lawn, because you will have to mow the grass on it later, and these bumps will seriously interfere with the lawn mower.

When 5 days (up to 10) are left before sowing the grass, the soil will need to be shed well, and complex fertilizers added to it.

Laying seeds for the future lawn

The choice of a mixture for sowing is determined by many factors. This is the type of lawn you want to see, its texture, the type of soil on the site, the characteristics of the relief of this site, as well as its illumination. As for the consumption of seeds of lawn grass during sowing, everything here is determined by the mixture itself and the area on which you will sow it. If we start from the square meter of the lawn on the plain with an average density of its sowing, then this usually takes about 30 grams of seeds. If you want to see a thicker lawn, moreover, there are slopes on your site, then here the consumption will already grow up to 50 grams of seeds all for the same square meter.

Before you start sowing your lawn, be sure to loosen the soil beneath it. This must be done in a depth of 3 or 4 centimeters, no more. This can be done with an ordinary garden rake or a cultivator. Next, your task is to evenly distribute the seeds of the grass mixture throughout the entire plot. It is quite difficult to do this without preparation, so professionals divide the site into parts (by 4 or 8, it all depends on the total area). Seeds are also divided into piles in each part of the plot. So it is much easier to achieve uniformity of future crops. When you sow the grass, they will need to be rolled with a roller or mulched from above. In terms of its thickness, the loose soil with sand, which you will fill the lawn with in the future, should be about 3 centimeters. When you finish all these procedures, the newly sown grass will need to be watered. This must be done evenly, be sure to carefully and only in the form of sprinkling.

You can wait for the first lawn grass on the site in a week, but this time can reach up to 3 weeks. It all depends on the season, watering, rainfall and many other conditions. The grass grows quickly enough, and when it stretches out to 10 - 15 centimeters, you will need to mow it the first time.

And here is a small but very informative video on the same topic. We look, here you will be shown the main stages of sowing lawn grass.

And here is another, more detailed video, where there is a lot more useful things. We look.

Lawn care

It is important not only how to properly plant the lawn, but also how to properly start caring for it:

  • first of all - regular watering, necessarily - through a fine spray, a large stream of water can wash out weak roots. The water should penetrate 5-7 cm deep, i.e. to the zone where active root growth occurs

Frequent watering is the key to a healthy, lush-looking lawn

  • when the grass reaches a height of 6-10 cm (depending on the type of lawn), the first haircut is carried out

Advice! When mowing for the first time, it is better to use a light lawn mower - too heavy can damage the soil that is not yet firm.

  • the more often the haircut is, the more intensively a strong root system will form.

The mowed grass from the mower's collector can be used to mulch the lawn immediately. This is good weed protection and some fertilizing effect.

Well-rooted and matured grass should not be lazy to cut often. This will provide her with a good root system.

Aeration of a small lawn is possible not only with the help of bulky machines, but also independently with the help of such ultra-budget devices - pads for shoes with long spikes

Aeration with a verticutter

Do not be upset if the lawn planted with your own hands in the first year does not please with emerald solidity. The British (and they know a lot about lawns), claim that a full-fledged lawn "ripens" only for 5 years. But with proper care, timely feeding and watering, it will be possible to enjoy the lawn grown with your own hands by the age of 3.

Mauritanian seed mixes are a way to create a blooming lawn all summer. Of the characteristic features: very tall vegetation is unsuitable for walking on it

Depending on the characteristics of the site, you can even combine realistic artificial and natural grass

How to plant a lawn: step by step instructions

It is not easy to grow a beautiful lawn in the country with your own hands, you must strictly adhere to a certain sequence.

A carefully prepared and leveled area, before sowing the lawn grass, will save you from many problems in the further maintenance of the lawn. Work begins with marking the future lawn, based on the general plan of the site and the style of landscape design in the country. After that, they go directly to earthworks:

  • treatment of the site with herbicide - young vegetation in May is most susceptible to the effects of herbicides. Some areas, abundantly overgrown with weeds, whose seeds have increased germination, will have to be treated several times, the interval between spraying is two weeks
  • site cleaning - after the vegetation treated with herbicide withers and dries up, the site must be cleaned of debris, old stumps, shrub roots, dried grass

A "wild" view of a beach-style lawn. Tall grass such as red fescue is suitable for creating such a lawn.

Advice! If the soil is poor and a large volume of fertile soil is required, the problem of weeds can be radically solved. Having made a deepening of about 20-30 cm, the entire area is covered with geotextiles - it will block the growth of weeds, whose seeds will remain in the soil.

Geotextile will radically protect against weeds and make the prepared surface flawlessly even

Multilevel lawn on artificial embankment

Soil preparation and fertilization

Careful implementation of this stage creates favorable conditions not only for friendly and fast germination and germination of seeds, but also for the further development of the lawn coverage. The soil optimal for the lawn is loose, fertile, well-drained, but at the same time capable of retaining enough moisture, have a sufficient supply of mineral elements that will ensure rapid growth and sustainable development of plants:

  • slaked lime or chalk is added to acidic soil
  • for loosening clay areas, with heavy and dense soil, it is better to use humus or vermicompost

Clayy shores of natural reservoirs are loosened and flavored with vermicompost before sowing grass

if the soil is fertile, then there is no need to dig deep into it - it will be enough just to dig up the top layer to clear it of weeds. This will give less draft and allow for a better leveling of the site.

Lawn design can be created by combining grass varieties of different colors, or when mowing with a lawn mower

  • the introduction of mineral fertilizers depends on the recommendations indicated on the seed packaging - it is individual for each seed set. Moreover, the composition of fertilizers also depends on the sowing time. In the spring, more nitrogen fertilizers are applied, which cause abundant growth of the grass, in the fall - more potassium and phosphorus, which will make the wintering better for the seeds.
  • additives and soil are evenly distributed over the entire area of the site, the soil is additionally loosened and moistened

Advice! The indicator of a well-prepared soil is that it is crumbly and does not stick to tools.

after leveling, the site is compacted with a special heavy (up to 100 kg) roller, while the manifested irregularities (pits, bumps) are leveled

The roller for leveling the surface of the site can be manual (up to 100 kg) and for a lawn mower. It is rarely needed, so you can not only buy it, but also rent it

after finishing the preparation it is necessary to give the site a few weeks "rest". On the one hand, the earth will shrink and compact, on the other hand, the remaining weeds will sprout, which will need to be removed

When planting grass in summer, you will have time to collect the weeds that have emerged after digging

A small area can be sown with your own hands, using a seeder will allow you to sow more evenly over a large area, while saving planting material. And a few more recommendations:

  • it is advisable to sow on a windless day, especially if you sow with your own hands
  • when seeding by hand, the lawn mixture is mixed with a similar volume of sand - this will ensure a more even distribution,

Grass seeds mixed with fertilizers. For more even hand seeding, mix seeds with sand during the process.

  • to achieve even distribution, seeds are sown in two directions - first along and then across the plot
  • before planting the lawn, if the soil is dry, it is watered by putting a fine spray nozzle on the hose, giving time for the water to be well absorbed
  • after sowing, the soil is loosened using a French rake and rolled. To prevent the seeds from being blown away by the wind, you can additionally sprinkle 1 cm of peat on top and repeat the rolling
  • after the end of the work, the area is again watered a little using a fine spray.

The procedure required for the lawn is aeration. By getting more air, water and fertilizer, the grass root system becomes stronger.

On the left is a lawn from a ready-made mixture of seeds, grown without fertilizers, on the right - with special organic and mineral fertilizers for natural lawns

A very important point, especially for those who sow the lawn with their own hands, because it depends on how much seeds you need to buy. On each package of seeds, the recommended consumption per 1 m2 must be indicated, but it should be taken into account:

  • when using a seeder, the average consumption is 25-30 g per square meter
  • with manual sowing, the "norm" is about 50 g / m
  • adhere to the recommendations on the packaging for autumn planting or before winter
  • in spring and summer, the planting density is increased by at least half. In the spring, many seeds can simply be washed off with water, in the summer they lose their germination due to high temperatures.

Sowing by hand in sloping areas is best done after making sure the weather is more or less dry in the coming weeks. Showers can just wash away the seeds

sowing density depends on the location and terrain features. Twice as many seeds are sown along the curb and paths. Sow more densely on irregularities and slopes, especially in the upper points, from where the water stream can carry the seeds

Chess design of stone slabs and natural grass on the site

Advice! When buying a lawn mixture, it is always worth taking with a margin - if suddenly for winter or bald spots are formed from the heat, you will have to sow, but you will not always be able to buy a similar mixture. If you use a different mixture, the color of the lawn can vary dramatically.

For very uneven surfaces, choose dense, low-growing grasses that do not require frequent mowing.
