Crumpled leaves of the vine: what are they a symptom of?

In this article, we'll explain what the crumpled leaves of the vine and how to intervene to restore its well-being.

The plants in your garden or terrace speak to you more often than you think. One of the ways is with the leaves: green and healthy, crumpled or with yellow spots, the leaves are excellent indicators of the well-being of plants.

This is of course also valid for the lives, a climbing shrub that certainly does not need too many presentations.

Vine: characteristics

Although, as mentioned, the vine does not need too many presentations, it is always useful to review its general characteristics.

Belonging to the family of Vitaceae, the Eurasian vine is widespread on all continents except Antarctica. Features a irregular bearing, with very developed branches, so much so that it can even reach several meters in length. THE branches, grayish in the first year of life, darken as the years pass. The gems that originate the ramifications can be of three types:

  • the dormant buds which develop the shoots in the following spring
  • the ready buds which develop second-rate shoots in the same year, known as female shoots
  • the latent buds which, after a variable period of inactivity, develop more or less luxuriant shoots, called suckers

Knowing the characteristics of the vine is the best way to prevent all problems

The leaves they are webbed and with toothed margins; opposite to the leaves there are i cirrus clouds, or tendrils, or support organs with a helical spiral development and which allow the anchoring of the shoot to any other support.

At first gathered in panicle-shaped inflorescences, erect and then pendulous, i flowers they have a poorly developed calyx divided into five sepals; five petals then form the corolla.

L'grape, the fruit of the vine, is a berry whose color varies depending on the lighting and environmental characteristics of the grape.

The bunch can be defined in various ways:

  • simple when it develops according to the central spine
  • winged when one of the branches develops in a marked way, giving rise to a lateral cluster
  • bifid when the branching is parallel and of the same length as that which develops from the main rachis

Leaves and plant care

We have said that the appearance of the leaves is an excellent indicator of the well-being of your plant: if this is healthy, in fact, the leaves will be shiny, with a solid structure, perfect margins and the characteristic color of the species to which they belong; if instead the leaves they change their color, they appear pitted or crumpled, it means that something is happening to the plant.

Parasitosis, deficiencies, infections, pathologies or wrong cultivation treatments can leave a mark on the leaves and on the plant.

These i signals to recognize and to which you will have to pay particular attention if you want to restore your plants to their initial well-being:

  • yellowing of the leaves, which could be caused by excessive watering, poor lighting or lack of nitrogen; to solve this problem, reduce the water intake, change the exposure of your plant or fertilize it
  • curling of the leaves, caused by too hot exposure, dry soil or root damage; you can change the exposure, control watering or repot
  • chlorosis, which occurs with whitening of the leaves and which can be caused by a lack of iron or magnesium; a possible remedy is to descale the water used for watering, also adding sodium chelate
  • sunburn causing a red, brown or silver gray color on the leaves; a first way to solve this problem could be to improve exposure, because it is probably excessive
  • foliar curling and redness, caused by aphids; to counter them you can use Marseille soap

Of course, for each plant these symptoms can have different causes.

The leaves of the vine are often affected by the curling phenomenon. What could it be causing?

Vine: problems in the leaves

The curling of the vine leaves can depend on two main problems:

  • L'mites of the vine
  • there botrytis of the vine

Let's see together what they consist of.

Vine mite disease

During the winter months and subsequent vegetative growth, your vines may be attacked by a mite belonging to the species Eriophyes vitis. These are the symptoms you need to watch out for to recognize an attack in progress:

  • the shoots appear more short
  • the gems may appear blocked or give rise to sprouts that develop with remarkable difficulty
  • the leaves are small and irregular, with the crumpled and torn leaf flap
  • on leaves there may also be some bubbles and of discolored areas

The mite attacks are divided into two moments:

  • the summer attacks, in the months of June and July, they curl up the growing leaves
  • the late attacks they cause the leaves to develop reddish brown colors

To try to put a stop to these mites, we first advise you not to use insecticides or fungicides which, in addition to significantly polluting the environment, could also eliminate natural predators, such as phytoseidae mites.

You can, however, use gods natural remedies, such as blends of sulfur and the oil, bothoil White both theoil rapeseed.

Mites and botrytis: dangerous enemies of the vine

Botrytis of the vine

There botrytis of the vine is one mold caused by the pathogen Botryotinia fuckeliana which attacks mature leaves, shoots, bunches and berries.

The attack proceeds as follows:

  • the leaves Yes crumple then necrotize
  • buds and shoots turn brown and dry up
  • on adult shoots are formed brown notches on nodes and internodes
  • on flowers causes the desiccation of bunches and their fall
  • the berries they come hit when ripe, because this mold develops on organs rich in water

As for the fight against botrytis, in addition to specific chemicals, you can also act in other ways:

  • avoids excess nitrogen
  • take care of one peeling, or a green pruning
  • limits the tillage
  • make one winter pruning to thin out unripe shoots (read here to find out how to prune correctly)
  • use gods rootstocks not excessively vigorous; if you don't know how to do a screw graft, read this article

In short, if you have a vine and you see crumpled leaves, act promptly: first of all make sure that the cultivation treatments you are carrying out are correct, then secondly try to understand which disease may have affected it. Understanding what is attacking the vines is difficult, especially when the only symptom is crumpled leaves. But with this little guide we hope to have helped you clarify your ideas.

Gioacchino di Terlizzi (Bari) asks:

all the varieties mentioned seem valid to me. In my experience the Red Globe and Black Magic are a little more flashy, but ultimately it comes down to personal taste.

As for the pruning the problem arises with any variety for which you could look for cuttings grafted on weaker rootstocks so that, having less vegetation, they adapt better to the guyot.

What are mushrooms?

THE mushrooms they are heterotrophic organisms, unicellular or multicellular, this means that they are not able to synthesize independently all the organic molecules they need.

In order to survive they must rely on organic compounds previously synthesized by other organisms, which are called autotrophs, such as all plants.

The relationship that can exist between this organism and the infested plant varies according to the species of fungus:

  • saprophytic fungi, which live at the expense of other dead organisms
  • parasitic fungi, which live at the expense of another living organism, the most harmful to our vineyards, can cause the death of the plants
  • symbiotic mushrooms, that is, they always live by exploiting another living organism but in this case both the symbiote and the host benefit from this coexistence.

Crumpled leaves of the vine: what are they a symptom of? - garden

MITES

Problem

The mites they are very small shaped insects round and a color ranging from red, to brown and yellow. Due to their size they cannot be seen with the naked eye, but their presence is noticed because the leaves present yellow spots and small deformations and swelling, or you may notice some cobwebs that parasites leave along the way.

Solution

The simplest and least harmful method of getting rid of mites is to clean plants well: wet outdoor plants with a garden hose and wash the leaves of indoor plants with water (possibly lukewarm with a little very mild soap). A cloth soaked in can also be used isopropyl alcohol, rubbing it gently on the underside of the leaves.
If the problem is more extensive they can be sprayed insecticides specific natural, or chemical based, taking care to choose the most suitable for the type of plant to avoid damaging it. In any case it is important delete immediately the parts of the plant that are infested, cutting the leaves that have been attacked by the parasite and removing those that have already fallen.
Also remember that some types of insects, including ladybugs, are predators of these parasites and it may be useful to encourage their presence.

Aphids

Problem
