Celery - Apium graveolens

The celery

Celery is widely cultivated for its food consumption, in particular for the use of its ribs, petioles of the leaves and stems, long and white, which are consumed in different ways: raw, seasoned with oil or various sauces, boiled, together with the green leaves, to enrich the flavor of the soup or for the composition of broth in the company of carrots but also of meat. Their use is also widespread for garnishing various dishes or for the preparation of sautéed, together with carrot and onion, as a base for tasty dishes. Celery is a common name for apium graveolens, and its family is that of the Umbelliferae. Celery was originally born as a marsh plant: this explains the considerable need for water during its growth, which can guarantee it adequate development. However, it does not like excessive humidity, a problem it shares with many other plants. In case of too much humidity, the plant could develop the "cryptogams", so it is advisable to follow the drainage of the water very carefully, so that this can happen regularly and not cause damage to the crop.

The plant loves mild temperatures, ranging between 15 and 20 degrees approximately. On the contrary, it does not easily tolerate low temperatures, below ten degrees, which end up causing early flowering. This develops regularly starting from the second year from the beginning of the vegetation.

Ground

The soil favored by the celery plant is a well-drained soil, with good availability of organic substance, with a medium mixture and with a pH that tends to neutrality. On the other hand, it does not like soils with the characteristic of being too sandy, due to their poor water supply capacity. But it does not tolerate even those that are too clayey, which, on the contrary, favor harmful stagnation of water that easily cause unpleasant fungal diseases.

It is important, in the cultivation of this plant, the moment of working the soil that will prepare the sowing. The roots of celery develop close to the surface, so it is necessary to operate for a leveling and rolling in such a way that the considerable irrigations that the plant needs do not cause stagnation of water that certainly causes problems for the growth of celery.

Fertilization

It is advisable to use a mature manure or compost in the phase of tillage. An excellent cultivation of the plant in fact requires abundant organic substance which, however, must not be completely decomposed. About 5 quintals of the recommended organic substance are needed for every 100 square meters of crop.

Cultivation

The sowing of celery takes place in relation to the external climatic conditions. On the temperature, as mentioned, the plant is very demanding and could have serious development problems in case of too cold climates. So celery varies its sowing in a long period, from February, with the help of a warm bed or greenhouse, until June. The first stages of plant development require warm temperatures, which is why it is advisable that these occur in the advanced phase of the spring season. A recommended sowing that takes place between the months of May and June provides afterwards a winter harvest in the open field. Sowing occurs superficially, due to the extremely small size of the celery seed. Sowing therefore takes place mainly in seedbeds, which will require about 0.5 grams of seed per square meter. Due to their smallness, therefore, the seeds must be buried about 0.5 centimeters below the ground or dropped on the surface of the ground and then covered with a very thin layer of charcoal dust or sand.

Subsequently, the transplant will be carried out after three weeks - about a month, in the presence of at least two or three leaves on the seedlings. At this point the seedlings must be buried in a protected environment and at a distance of about 5 cm. Then we move on to the final planting, which takes place after one month and within the second month after the first transplant, a waiting space to wait for a favorable climatic and atmospheric situation.

Watering

As mentioned, celery needs abundant irrigation that can guarantee optimal development. After transplanting, it is therefore necessary to intervene regularly by watering the plant at most every three days. To avoid problems related to water stagnation, however, it is advisable to operate often but not excessively. An irrigation by flow will also be preferable to that by sprinkling, in order to avoid any formation of unpleasant fungal presences.

Celery: Parasites

A frequent danger for the plant is represented by the so-called "miner fly" which wedges itself between the leaves, producing small holes and causing infections that are dangerous for development. In this regard, it is advisable to associate plants of the lily family with celery or to spread an infusion of tansy once or twice a week. In the event of an attack it will be necessary to spread a special extract of absinthe or quassio wood mixed with soap and water, in a measure of about 800 grams of quassium wood, 200 grams of soap and about 100 liters of water.
