There are crops all over the world and it is part of one of the most important "natural" families (the Liliaceae): we are talking about the onion, which represents one of those aromas that can be found more easily in the kitchens of the entire planet.
In any case, it is an extremely ancient horticultural product, which boasts a not indifferent tradition and history: moreover, it has strong therapeutic properties that make it excellent also for various treatments and cures.
The onion is, in reality, a herbaceous plant that develops every two years: in most cases, however, it is subjected to cultivation and, for the latter reason, it usually grows and produces bulbs every year.
The part of the plant that is consumed is represented by the central bulb, which can be eaten both by cooking it and still when it is raw.
Moving on to the characteristics that the soil on which you intend to start an onion cultivation must have, it must be emphasized that the fertility must be quite high, but it is important to note, at the same time, the fact that the onion also develops in different climates among them, despite the particularly low temperatures among their preferences.
The main Italian regions that host onion crops are Emilia Romagna, Sicily, Puglia and Campania.
Onion is one of those plants that can boast a high nutritional value: first of all, this is due to the presence of an excellent amount of vitamins and also of mineral salts, especially due to the strong content of vitamin C.
moreover, inside the onion we can also find other components worthy of interest, such as a large number of enzymes that help the digestion process and perform a stimulating action on the metabolism.
We must not forget how inside the onion you can also easily find trace elements, such as iron, potassium, magnesium, sulfur and fluorine.
Among the various active ingredients we also find flavonoids, which allow to carry out an important diuretic action, but equally interesting is the presence of glucokinin, that is a plant hormone, which is characterized by typically carrying out a beneficial function against diabetes.
Onion is one of those foods that can boast a great wealth of essential oils, but also of components based on sulfur, mineral salts and vitamins: this simply explains the reason why it is frequently used in the phytotherapeutic field, especially in the case of in which abscesses or chilblains have to be countered.
Thanks, then, to the fact that it contains a good number of essential oils, the onion is frequently exploited in the form of decoctions that can also be prepared at home with great ease.
For this last purpose, it is sufficient to remove the so-called external coating from the onions, and then wash them and slice them: the next operation will be to boil them in a pot full of water for a period. at least a quarter of an hour.
Once this last operation is finished, the mixture must be filtered and then it can be applied directly on the part affected by the disorder, perhaps using a gauze pad as a buffer.
The onion-based decoction is also frequently used for a purpose more linked to beauty and cosmetics: in support of this thesis, in recent times a lot of onion-based compounds are used to counteract and delay hair loss, but also to restore freshness to all those dry or damaged skin.
Among the various onion-based preparations, we cannot undoubtedly fail to mention the infusion, which is characterized by being very useful in relation to different purposes, even if in a marked way they are used in the medicinal field.
The secret to preparing a good infusion is to carefully cut the onion into slices, and then wait for the maceration, for a period of at least three days, in a liter of dry white wine.
Obviously you should not exceed with the intake of the onion-based infusion, since the ideal quantity for administration is equal to one glass, always away from meals, about three times a day.
It is an infusion that undoubtedly has, among its main characteristics, that of having a high quantity of vitamin C and diuretic salts inside and is particularly recommended when it comes to treating diseases that affect the urinary and renal tracts. .
Furthermore, the infusion made with onion is also extremely useful when you need to treat diabetes, simply because it proves to be a remarkably hypoglycemic compound.
