The mother tincture of Uva Ursina is obtained by maceration in water and alcohol of the leaves of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi.
Bearberry is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, in particular in the case of cystitis acute and chronic, urethritis and colibacillosis. The action of the plant is due to the presence of arbutin. This active principle is hydrolyzed in the intestine with the release of hydroquinone, which is eliminated through the urinary tract where, in alkaline conditions, it exerts a marked bacteriostatic action. In vitro studies confirm its action in particular against E. coli, Stapholococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris.
To promote the action of bearberry it is important to alkalize the urine through an adequate diet rich in vegetables.
The plant also presents good diuretic properties due to the presence of flavonoids, arbutoside and phenolic glycosides in the phytocomplex. Its use is also reported in geriatrics, in the case of prostatic hypertrophy with an inflammatory and infectious component as well as in the case of catheter-related cystitis.
North American medicine used it as a tonic for the urinary organs in inflammations and stones in the urogenital system.
