GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NARCISO

Plants belonging to the NARCISSUS genus, better known as NARCISO, belong to the Amaryllidaceae family, a large family within which we find well-known plants such as theAmaryllis, theZephyranthes, theVallota, theClivia, just to name a few.

It is a genus of over 50 species, all perennial bulbous plants, whose characteristic is that of possessing a bulb, which measures 12-14 cm in circumference, covered with a usually brown tunic.

Leaves they are thin, flexible, ribbon-like or cylindrical in some species, and of a beautiful green-gray color, 20-40 cm long and arise directly from the bulb. There are usually three, two located on one side of the stem and one on the opposite side.

The stem it is thin and fleshy with a quadrangular or triangular section.

The flowers they are typically funnel-shaped with a central crown surrounding the stamens. The flowers are terminal along the stem usually solitary even if they are often found gathered in groups. Both the size and the color of the flowers are very variable and depend not only on the species but also on the variety, even if they are mainly white or yellow, occasionally green. The crowns can be of different colors (yellow, red, orange, fuchsia). They have six stamens, three shorter and three longer. Flowering is spring although there are varieties that bloom in autumn. In most species they are fragrant.

They are plants that in addition to making the garden cheerful, can also be grown in boxes, in pots, on the balcony or in the windowsills.

In popular language the narcissus is called daffodil or trombone, referring to this and two specific species (see paragraph Main species).

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION AND ORIGIN

The narcissus comes from different habitats in Europe and North Africa and usually grows at sea level on prairies, at the edges of rivers and among rocks.

In Italy it is cultivated on a very small area, about 75 ha. Contrary to other countries such as Great Britain, where it is the most popular plant and is produced not only as a cut flower, but also as a bulb.

MAIN SPECIES

In the genre Narcissus we find about 50 species and a very large quantity of cultivars and hybrids (over 30,000 have been exceeded) so that in order to classify them in the best way they have been divided into 12 classes according to the shape of the flower.

In practice, the daffodils, more than any other species attract growers, we can say as a narcissist!

Let's remember the species:

NARCISSUS POETICUS

The Narcissus poeticus (photo below) is the wild narcissus and is the main progenitor of all hybrids found on the market today. It is very appreciated for its white and pleasantly scented flowers provided in the central part of a sort of yellow-orange or yellow-reddish crown. The flowers are terminal along a stem about 30 cm high. The leaves are long and narrow, typical of the genus.

It blooms in spring, at the end of April - early May.

Note 1

It is native to southern Europe and is known as narcissus of poets.

The Narcissus poeticus ornatus it is a very robust hybrid, similar to the mother species, except that the flowering is much earlier, in March.

NARCISSUS TAZETTA (or N. CUZZETTA)

The Narcissus tazetta (photo below) known as daffodil, is the most common and widespread species. We find it throughout southern Europe, in the Canary Islands, in Persia, in China, in Japan and also in Kashmir.

It blooms in early spring, in March, producing white flowers with a sort of golden yellow or sometimes white crown in the center. The flowers are terminal along a stem about 30 cm high.

Note 1

There are numerous varieties among which we remember: N. tazetta 'Paper White' which produces particularly fragrant flowers and is suitable for growing in pots and blooms from December to March; N. tazetta italicus produces completely yellow flowers.

NARCISSUS BULBOCODIUM

The Narcissus bulbocodium (photo below) has dark green, ribbon-like leaves. It blooms in mid-spring producing deep yellow flowers about 3cm wide. It is one of the smallest dwarf species there is, not exceeding 15 cm in height.

The variety N. bulbocodium citrinus, produces beautiful lemon yellow flowers.

NARCISSUS SEROTICUS

The Narcissus serotinus (photo below) is a species native to southern Europe present mainly in Portugal and Greece. It blooms in the fall and has a very small flower crown, the smallest of its kind.

The flowers are fragrant, the petals are white with a yellow inner crown.

The Narcissus pseudonarcissus known as trombone narcissus (photo below), is a very popular yellow-colored species with a simple or double crown. It blooms in early spring producing reclining flowers up to 7cm wide that are completely yellow.

CULTURAL TECHNIQUE OF NARCISO

Daffodils are hardy plants that are fairly simple to grow. In fact, they find themselves spontaneous almost everywhere since they can easily overcome even the coldest winters.

They are plants that tend to go wild, because they always produce new bulbs. Therefore, if they are grown in the garden and you do not want them to invade all the space there is, it is necessary to remove the bulbs from the ground and thin them out every 2/3 years. At the limit you can collect the bulbs and store them in a cool and dry place to plant them in the autumn in another place. However, they are plants that can easily naturalize in a meadow or undergrowth.

EXPOSURE

The daffodils should be placed in a sunny position even if they can tolerate a few hours of partial shade, however, in this case, flowering in a more difficult way.

Avoid areas that are too ventilated.

TEMPERATURE

Daffodils tolerate both high and low temperatures without much problem.

WATERING

The soil that hosts the narcissus should be kept moist, not soaked. When, until when and how much to water is governed by the flowering of the plant. So let's see how to behave in the different cases.

Spring flowering daffodils

The soil should be kept moist, not soaked. When the flowers have wilted in late spring and the leaves also begin to dry up, only then do you begin to gradually reduce watering, without ever allowing the soil to dry out completely. Stop only when the whole aerial part has dried up (summer period). In fact, if you stop earlier, there will be a delay in the development of the bulbs which will result in poor flowering.

Autumn flowering daffodils

In this case, during the summer months, it is necessary to leave the soil dry and start watering in moderation, only in late summer, when the plant begins to grow and prepares for winter flowering.

WHEN AND HOW TO PLANT NARCISO BULBS

For spring flowering plants: the bulbs should be planted in autumn (from September to October).

For autumn flowering plants: the bulbs should be planted in spring.

They should be placed at a depth equal to three times the height of the bulb. For example, a 5 cm high bulb will be placed in a 15 cm hole and then covered with 10 cm of earth. As for the distance between the bulbs it is in proportion to the size of the bulbs but it is advisable to plant them quite dense so the flowers remain supported by the leaves and do not run the risk of bending if a strong wind or heavy rain arrives.

If they are planted in pots, use containers that are at least 6 inches in diameter.

WHERE TO PLACE THE NARCISTS

Narcissus bulbs are flowers that are quite suitable for cultivation in the open ground, in flower beds, in pots, in rock gardens. These are suitable places to host them not requiring special care.

TYPE OF SOIL - REPOT

The type of soil to use is essential for having beautiful flowering plants. The ideal is to use a basically acidic soil with organic substance to which a little sand is also added which will make the soil more porous, in order to ensure good drainage. This way the soil will stay moist but not soggy.

The bulbs, if they are large and in good condition, have more than enough reserves to bloom. The problem arises for the flowering of the following year, that is, for the formation of the new bulb. In fact, if the soil is not sufficiently moist and rich in nutrients, the new bulb will struggle to form and this will affect the flowering of the following year. This is why fertilization plans are important.

FERTILIZATION

The narcissus must be fertilized at the beginning of the vegetative period and then from the end of winter until the leaves are dry. It is advisable to use a fertilizer that, in addition to the normal elements and microelements, is poor in nitrogen (N) but rich in potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) which favor flowering. After it has flowered, use a fertilizer that has all the elements equally balanced, to promote the accumulation of nutrients in the bulb.

Bear in mind that daffodils are very greedy plants and deplete the soil of its nutrients. Therefore, if they have remained in a soil continuously for three years, for example, it is necessary to heavily replenish the nutrients in the soil in order to plant any other species.

FLOWERING OF NARCISO

Daffodils usually bloom in spring, early or late season depending on the species. However, there are also varieties that bloom in autumn (N. serotinus).

Since the narcissus propagate from the bulbils that form, it is advisable, when the plant fades, to immediately cut the flower to prevent it from going to seed and therefore losing precious nutrients that it is preferable to go into the bulbils.

Note 2

PRUNING

For the narcissus we are not talking about real pruning. It is simply advisable to eliminate the withered flowers and dry leaves to avoid an unnecessary waste of energy, allowing the plant to go to seed (and therefore waste resources that would go to the bulbs).

MULTIPLICATION

The narcissus multiplies through the bulbs.

MULTIPLICATION FOR BULBS

First method

The plants multiply by detaching the bulbils that form (roughly in July, when the plant has dried all the aerial part). They remove themselves from the ground and clean themselves well to eliminate the earth. After which they divide from the mother bulb. It would be advisable after having divided them, to give them a bath with water in which a broad-spectrum fungicide has been dissolved to prevent pathogens from penetrating into the cut wound. They must therefore be dried in the shade and stored in a cool and dry place until autumn when they will be buried again. The cloves will be planted in small pots and fertilized during the vegetative period to allow them to grow in size. These bulbs will flower after 2/3 years after they have swollen sufficiently.

To have more robust bulbs, prevent the plant from going to seed. Therefore, as soon as the flower has withered, it must be cut to prevent seeds from forming and therefore wasting precious nutrients for something that will not be used.

Second method

Another method is to divide a bulb with a single tip into eight wedges and place them in a container with peat and sand, keeping them in a warm and humid environment. Within three months from the scales, especially from the central ones, bulbs will be born that will take 3/4 years to swell and go to flower.

PARASITES AND DISEASES

The narcissus, despite being a robust and rustic plant and therefore not subject to attacks by parasites, can be infected mainly due to poor cultivation techniques. We may therefore have:

Bulb fly

This is the Lampetia equestris a narcissus bulb fly whose larvae can infest the bulbs by feeding on their tissues by digging tunnels inside them. Bulbs attached do not bloom.

Remedies: the disease must be prevented by taking a hot bath (at 45 ° C for about an hour) to the bulbs immediately after harvesting.

Rot of the bulbs

This disease manifests itself as a browning of the bulbs which gradually become soft and eventually rot. Plants are weak, do not bloom and die.

Remedies: the remedies are preventive, taking care not to allow the water to stagnate in the soil, always guaranteeing good drainage.

Spots on the leaves

There Botrytis narcissicola is a fungus that causes mold on the plant. This disease is common when it is too humid. It is common where daffodils are present only in particularly humid environments. The first symptoms appear on the emerging leaves in spring, with more or less light brown spots that gradually enlarge causing them to turn yellow. The buds that emerge will also have brown lesions and the flowers will not develop.

It can also affect only the bulbs at rest when they are stored in closed and humid environments.

Remedies: it is possible to intervene if the plants are in the ground and show the first symptoms using copper-based products. If the bulbs are infected, they need to be thrown away.

GUIDE TO BUYING NARCISO BULBS

When we go to buy daffodils, we take into account that the price of the bulbs is linked to the number of buds present. Small bulbs have only one bud and therefore will produce only one flower while bulbs with more buds will produce as many flowers as there are buds. When purchasing it is preferable to opt for bulbs with one or two buds, not more.

It is necessary to check that the bulbs are healthy, firm, not damaged or soft and that there are no obvious diseases.

CURIOSITY'

An ancient Greek legend is linked to this flower and it is the myth of Narcissus. Narcissus was a child as beautiful as a god, with whom he himself fell in love and this was the cause of his downfall. In fact, he let himself die of hunger of thirst so as not to take his eyes off his image reflected in the water even for a moment. The gods took pity and gave this beautiful flower its name.

The bulbs as well as the leaves contain a poisonous alkaloid, narcissin which, if ingested accidentally, can cause neuronal disorders and gastric inflammation in animals and humans and if not treated within 24 hours, can cause death.

Exposure

THE daffodils they grow better if you plant them in full sun, even if they can withstand a little shade.

Consider that, once they have blossomed, the flowers will grow towards the sun, so if you have planted them in a slightly shaded place, gradually the daffodils will have upturned blooms forward towards the sun.

Flowering

THE narcissus flowers they are generally white or yellow and are characterized by three and three petals sepals petal-shaped and a cup-shaped central protuberance that can also be of a different color than the petals.

Narcissus flowers are available from November to April depending on the species. The most common narcissus blooms in early spring.

Narcissus, a beautiful but dangerous flower

THEthe narcissus, whose beautiful and fragrant flowers symbolize superficiality and vanity, belongs to family of the Amaryllidaceae, and is native to India, Persia, Japan, China, Africa and southern Europe.

Herbaceous perennial with bulbous root, is a plant suitable for forming borders, mixed borders and flower beds, for decorating rustic gardens, for pots of cut flowers and also for growing in pots.

The scientific name Narcissus refers to hypnotic properties of the plant, due to the intense scent (so strong it stuns!) of the corollas. From some species (it includes about 40) essences with an extremely delicate scent are extracted. Its leaves, which sprout directly from the bulb, are very decorative: long, narrow and deep green.

The flower color (from the corollas of different shapes from species to species) varies from white to yellow, to greenish.

Expose the daffodils to full sun, partial shade and shade, hosting them in an organic soil mixed with river sand in equal parts.

How to grow daffodils

Growing them is not difficult, although to be fully successful, it is good to stick to some simple rules:

  • bury the bulbs no more than 3 cm from the surface (with the tip just emerging from the ground), a little oblique, to prevent them from sinking lower over time and spacing them at least 20 cm from each other ( in the ground) of about 12 cm if in pot.
  • keep the soil fresh, but not soaked, and leave the bulbs there without removing them, for at least 4 years.
  • for growing in pots or bowls, choose the "dwarf" varieties, purchasing the bulbs already treated for indoor cultivation.

The narcissus, so attractive and showy, hides a secret ..

The bulbs of the narcissus are saturated with narcissin, poisonous substance very dangerous that, properly worked, is used for the preparation of medicines from beneficial purifying properties.

If you have bulbs on your balcony with a view to burying them, be careful not to confuse them with spring onions or shallots!

There are many daffodils: daffodil (six very fragrant species) tazetta (with small very fragrant flowers), suitable for growing in pots narcissus of poets, a single species of extraordinary beauty, with many hybrids and varieties of hanging narcissus, with hanging flowers , solitary or in bunches of crinoline daffodils, with small ruffled flowers, trombone daffodils, with numerous species, among the most widespread and cultivated autumn flowering narcissus, the most suitable for very mild areas.

Since touching the bulbs and the sap of the daffodils can cause a slight irritation to the skin, protect your hands with special gloves.

Narcissus, main varieties

In popular parlance, daffodils are also called trombones or daffodils. In reality, these names are only suitable for some species of this plant. Theredaffodil (Narcissus jonquilla), for example, is a particular type of narcissus, with a very intense scent and characterized by the presence of several flowers on the same stem.

The trombone narcissus (Narcissus pseudonarcissus), with an intense yellow color, grows spontaneously in meadows, fields and vineyards up to 800 meters above sea level. It is present as a wild flower throughout the peninsula, although today it is quite rare to find.

Other widespread species in Italy are: the Narcissus poeticus, known as wild narcissus or May flower, with yellow calyx and white petals and the narcissus tazetta (Narcissus tazetta), with a perfume similar to that of honey and with the crown in the shape of a bowl or cup.
